RHP Aaron Harang going up against RHP Jeff Karstens

Aaron Harang is coming into this game with a 9-3 record and a 2.49 ERA in 18 starts. Harang is 0-1 against the Pirates this season with a 7.20 ERA, but 13-6 lifetime with a 4.19 ERA in 23 starts. He is coming off his third-worst start of the season. He gave up six runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings against Colorado last Saturday. He is 2-1 over his last three starts despite a 6.88 ERA. Harang has a four-game winning streak on the road.

Jeff Karstens is coming into this game with a 8-5 record and a 2.49 ERA in 23 games, 19 starts. Karstens has the fourth-lowest ERA in the National League and his 1.87 ERA in night games is the lowest in the league. He is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in one start against the Padres this season and 0-3 lifetime against the Padres with a 5.89 ERA in five games (three starts).
